Buying guide

How to Choose a Hydraulic Cylinder

Six questions decide which hydraulic cylinder fits your machine. Answer them before you request a quote and you'll get the right cylinder faster.

  1. How much force do you need?

Cylinder force depends on bore area and system pressure.

Force (kg) ≈ bore² (cm) × 0.785 × pressure (bar)

For example, a 101 mm bore at 180 bar pushes about 14.4 tonnes. Allow a safety margin above your working load.

  2. What pressure does your system run at?

Systems up to 150 bar suit our 150 Series tie rod cylinders. Higher-pressure mining and earthmoving systems need the 250 Series welded cylinder, rated for 250 bar.

  3. Tie rod or welded?

Tie rod cylinders are simple to strip and reseal, which suits agriculture and packaging. Welded cylinders are more compact and stronger, which suits mining and heavy plant.

  4. What stroke and closed length?

Measure the full travel you need and the space available when the cylinder is retracted. If the stroke is long but space is tight, a multi-stage telescopic cylinder is usually the answer.

  5. How will it be mounted?

Clevis, flange, trunnion and spherical bearing mounts all handle load and alignment differently. Match the mount to your existing pins or brackets, or send us a photo and we'll identify it.

  6. Single or double acting?

Single acting cylinders push under pressure and return by gravity or a spring, as on most tippers. Double acting cylinders are powered in both directions.

Questions

Hydraulic Cylinders for Sale: FAQs

Where can I buy hydraulic cylinders in South Africa?

Kappa Engineering sells hydraulic cylinders directly from our workshop in Germiston, Gauteng. We supply customers across South Africa and into the DRC and Namibia. Request a quote online or call +27 (0)11 828 5506.

How much does a hydraulic cylinder cost?

Price depends on bore size, stroke, working pressure, mounting style, materials and quantity. A small tie rod cylinder costs far less than a large-bore welded cylinder built to order. Send us your specifications or the cylinder you're replacing and we'll quote you.

What is the difference between tie rod and welded hydraulic cylinders?

Tie rod cylinders are held together by external steel rods, so they are easy to strip and reseal. Our 150 Series tie rod cylinders are rated at 150 bar. Welded cylinders have the end cap welded to the barrel, making them more compact and better suited to high pressure. Our 250 Series welded cylinders are rated at 250 bar.

Can you make a cylinder with a non-standard stroke?

Yes. Strokes can be made to your specification, and we manufacture every component in-house, so non-standard bores, strokes and mountings are routine.

Do you keep hydraulic cylinders in stock?

We keep popular tipper cylinder sizes in stock, along with remanufactured service exchange units for common mining and earthmoving equipment. Contact us to check availability for your model.

How are your hydraulic cylinders tested?

Cylinders are tested at 1.5 times their operating pressure before dispatch. Our quality system is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and parts are inspected throughout production.

Do you have a hydraulic cylinder catalogue?

Yes. You can download catalogues for the 250 Series, 150 Series, heavy duty tie rod and Tipper Series ranges from the catalogue section on this page.
