When the Part Is Eight Weeks Away

There is a moment that every maintenance manager knows.

A machine stops. Someone walks over, looks at the hydraulic cylinder, and sees oil where oil should not be. The diagnosis takes about ninety seconds. The rod is scored, or a seal has gone, or the barrel has worn.

Then comes the phone call to the supplier, and then the sentence that ruins the week: the part is on order. Eight to twelve weeks.

why the wait keeps getting longer

South African fleets have never been more diverse. Over the past decade, equipment has arrived here from every major manufacturing region in the world, and buyers have made sensible decisions, good machines at good prices, with the technology to match.

What often arrives more slowly is the support behind them. A machine can be built in one country, sold through an agent in another, and end up on a site outside Rustenburg. Its replacement cylinder still has to travel that whole chain backwards before it reaches you. Add customs, add shipping, add a distributor who does not hold that particular part number in local stock.

None of this is anyone’s fault. It is simply the arithmetic of a global supply chain meeting a machine that is standing still.

Meanwhile, the machine costs money every single day it does not work.

Here is what a hydraulic cylinder actually is: a steel tube, a polished rod that slides in and out of it, a piston, and a set of seals that keep the oil where it belongs.

That is true irrespective of whether the machine was built in Japan, Germany, Italy, Korea, the United States, or anywhere else. Manufacturers differ on mounting arrangements, port sizes, and materials. They do not differ on physics.

That is true irrespective of whether the machine was built in Japan, Germany, Italy, Korea, the United States, or anywhere else. Manufacturers differ on mounting arrangements, port sizes, and materials. They do not differ on physics.

  • Seal failure. Seals are consumable. They perish with heat, age, and contamination. This is the most common failure and usually the least serious.
  • Rod scoring. The chrome-plated rod picks up a scratch, from grit, from a damaged wiper seal, from an impact. Once scored, it destroys every seal it passes.
  • Bore wear. The inside of the tube wears oval over years of side-loading. The piston no longer seals against it.
  • Bent rods and damaged mountings. Usually, the result of a single bad day rather than gradual wear.

 

Every one of these is a known, understood, repairable condition. None of them requires a new cylinder from overseas.

repair, remanufacture, replace

Not every cylinder is worth saving, and any workshop that tells you otherwise is selling something. The honest assessment looks like this.

If the barrel is sound and the rod can be re-machined and re-plated, remanufacturing almost always wins, on time, on cost, and often on quality. A remanufactured cylinder is built back to a measured specification, one unit at a time, by someone who can see exactly what failed and why. A production line cannot do that.

If the barrel is cracked, or the geometry is beyond correction, replacement is the right answer, and a good workshop will say so rather than take your money.

The point is that this should be a decision you make, based on an inspection, in days. Not a decision made for you by a shipping schedule.

What to ask before you order the part

 Next time a cylinder fails, before you accept a twelve-week lead time, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Has anyone physically inspected and measured this cylinder, or are we ordering from a part number?
  2. Can the rod be re-machined and re-plated to original tolerance?
  3. What is the turnaround if we remanufacture locally?

The answers might still send you back to the OEM. Often, they will not.
