What is CNC Machining?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. This process can be used to control a range of complex machinery from grinders and lathes to mills and routers. With CNC machining, three-dimensional cutting tasks can be accomplished in a single set of prompts.

How CNC Machining Works

At the core of CNC machining is high-level software which is used to create the code that governs the equipment’s operations. This code provides everything the machine needs to execute actions with precision, including speed, location, synchronization, and feed rate. The process begins with a digital 2D or 3D model of the final component, typically designed within a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. This model is then translated into a machine-readable format (G-code), and the CNC machine executes the operations based on this script.

Equipment Used in CNC Machining

The CNC system consists of three main parts:

  • The Machine: The actual machine that performs the cutting, drilling, or milling.
  • The Controller: The computer that translates the design into commands and controls the machine.
  • The Software: The applications used to create the designs and translate them into a language that the machine can understand.

 

Common types of CNC machines include:

  • CNC Mills: Capable of running programs composed of specific numbers and letters that guide the spindle in various depths and directions.
  • Lathes: Machines that rotate the material against the tool with programs that dictate the motion.
  • Plasma Cutters: Used for cutting metal and other materials using a plasma torch, controlled by a computer.

CNC machining is pivotal in industries where precision and repeatability are critical, such as aerospace and aviation, automotive, and manufacturing. It is used to fabricate metal and plastic parts that require high precision, and it’s also used in the production of intricate components that cannot be manually processed.
